Advances in Watermain Rehabilitation

This workshop will present recent advances in the North America watermain rehabilitation industry. It will start with ongoing and recent developments by the AWWA Watermain Rehabilitation Standards committee by chairs of the committees giving presentations.


    Update on the recently published White Paper that provides new guidance on the classification of watermain rehabilitation products and design considerations. This presentation will show you that not all watermain rehabilitation products are the same and how to specify the product you want to have.

Ongoing and recent advances with respect to watermain product testing on going at the University of Waterloo, advances in end seals and service connections, the City of Toronto Watermain rehabilitation program and business case for cathodic protection.

Presentation on the design of the Region of Peel first HDPE watermain distribution system.


Chris Macey , P.Eng. Americas Technical Practice Leader - Condition Assessment and Rehabilitation at AECOM, and a trenchless expert whom has work with water utilities across North America that include City of Toronto, Colorado Springs, City of Winnipeg and others. Chris is also the co-author of the AWWA White Paper and a member of the following AWWA M28 committees CIPP Standard and M28 Watermain rehabilitation.

Dr. Mark Knight P.Eng. and Consulting Engineer is an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo and Executive Director of the Centre for Advancement of Trenchless Technology. Mark has over 15 years of experience in testing and the design of watermain rehabilitation products and currently chairs AWWA M28 Watermain rehabilitation and CIPP Standard development.  He is also a member of the AWWA Sliplining committee and Chairs of the AWWA Watermain Rehabilitation Committee.

Randy Cooper P.Eng. is President of Envirologics and chaired the development of ASTM and AWWA Sprayed in-Place Pipe standards.  Randy is also the developer of the Tomahawk pipe cleaning and lining system and promotes Clean-line and protect as a cost effective water pipe rehabilitation strategy.

George Bontus P.Eng. is Director of Engineering at the Aegion Corporation and chairs AWWA Sliplining Standard.  George is also the Vice Chair of the AWWA M28 Watermain rehabilitation committee. George also has his name on several patents for the reinstatement of watermain service laterals and over 20 years of experience in pipe rehabilitation using cured-in-place-pipe.

Matthew Coleman P.Eng. is a Senior Engineer, Asset Planning at Toronto Water where he has been developing and running Toronto Water’s Watermain CIPP program values at over $60 million per annum. This program Matthew manages is one of the largest in North America.  Prior to joining the City of Toronto Matthew worked at Echologics doing pressure pipeline inspections.
