Horizontal Directional Drilling Fundamentals: Design to Construction

Four-Day Hands-on Field School (June 25-28, 2018)

CATT and Fleming College has partnered to offer the Horizontal Directional Drilling Fundamentals: Design to Construction. This course introduces participants to the planning, design and installation of underground pipelines and conduits using horizontal directional drilling (HDD). Topics will include: HDD process and technology; geotechnical and environmental considerations and feasibility; site evaluation and tracking; drilling fluids and fluid pumps; underground locates; and HDD borepath planning and design considerations. Furthermore, case studies demonstrating good practice guidelines and quality assurance and quality control procedures for successful completion of HDD project will be presented. The course will integrate classroom study and field practice. The students will use the classroom knowledge to plan, design and execute borepath in the field using state-of-the-art HDD equipment. The topics will include:

  • Installation and Feasibility Consideration

  • HDD Process and Equipment

  • HDD Project Planning

  • Geotechnical Considerations and Investigations

  • Drill Fluid Design and Testing

  • Bore Path Layout and Design

  • Design of Plastic and Steel Pipes

  • Best Practices and QA/QC

Financial Aid

MOECC Director Approved Credits

The course has been approved for 2.8 CEUs (continuing education units) by the Manger of Certification, Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC).
